Town of Mashpee: Volunteers Needed!

Town of Mashpee: Volunteers Needed!

Notification from Andrew McManus

Town of Mashpee – Conservation Agent

The Mashpee Conservation Department is seeking volunteer counters for our annual Herring Count Program. Mashpee has three herring runs: Johns Pond/Quashnet River, Santuit Pond/Santuit River & the Mashpee River herring run.

The program involves counting herring at a designated spot at each run for 10 minutes at a time. The purpose is to get a seasonal estimate of overall run size (numbers) for each location so we can assess the health of each run.

Anyone interested in signing up for this citizen scientist program can contact Andrew at:
amcmanus@mashpeema.gov
Phone: 508-539-1400 X 8539

or the Assistant Conservation Agent, Katelyn Cadoret at:
kwcadoret@mashpeema.gov
Phone: 508-539-1400 X 8538

We’ll provide you with all the details you’ll need to participate in this program. It’s fun, it’s easy & it’s important!!

We would like to recruit as many volunteers as possible, especially for the Santuit Pond herring run, which is one of the most active & being assessed for improvements to the fish ladder design, so count data at this location is a priority. Thank you in advance for your interest & consideration.

Any questions about the herring runs & management thereof, please feel free to contact us through our Conservation Dept phone and/or email
