MassDOT Canal Transportation Study Update from Canal Region Chamber of Commerce

On Wednesday, February 13th MassDot presented potential roadway improvements involving the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges. They touched on how these case studies would work individually and in conjunction with one another, as well as, their overall impact on traffic operations. The purpose of this conceptual planning study is to identify existing and future multi-modal transportation deficiencies and needs around the Cape Cod Canal area.

  • Provide greatest long-term improvement in accessibility and mobility for Cape Cod residents, employers, and visitors
  • Provide transportation system to ensure public safety in the event of an emergency evacuation of Cape Cod
  • Could accommodate the rehabilitation or replacement of the Canal bridges, envisioned as having two travel lanes and one auxiliary lane in each direction

The study entails developing and analyzing a range of transportation alternatives in Bourne and Sandwich. These include highway interchange, and non-highway improvements, as well as options and design elements that improve access and safety for all modes. The study includes significant coordination with the US Army Corps of Engineers.
