Jazz Pianist Sullivan Fortner to Perform at Highfield Hall & Gardens as Part of the Wood Hole Jazz Summer Series Sunday, July 28, from 4:00-6:00 pm

FALMOUTH, MA—Jazz Pianist Sullivan Fortner will perform at Highfield Hall & Gardens on Sunday, July 28, from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm, as part of the Woods Hole Jazz Summer Series.

Just like jazz greats Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden and Louis Armstrong before him, Fortner was born in New Orleans, the Cradle of Jazz. While other four-year-olds were learning how to peddle a trike, Sullivan surprised his mother by plunking out the theme from the Jeopardy TV game show on his Fisher-Price piano.

At 9, he was playing for church choirs throughout the Big Easy. At 11, he won a Cox Cable “Amazing Kids Award.” By the time he was out of high school, he was well on his way to receiving the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association and the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Along the way, he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music in Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of Music.

Today, Fortner is one of the top jazz pianists of his generation, known for his virtuosic technique and engaging performances. As leader, The Sullivan Fortner Trio has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. He has also partnered with greats like Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Fred Hersch, and Etienne Charles.

In the studio, Fortner recorded with Grammy Award winning artists Roy Hargrove and Cecile McLorin Salvant on their highly anticipated albums and received praise from The New York Times and Downbeat Magazine for his debut album, “Aria” (2015). Jazz Weekly called his sophomore album, “Moments Preserved” (2018) an even “stronger follow-up to his impressive debut.”
