Hello, my name is Becki Grainger and I will be doing blog entries on this website for the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. You have probably heard of my name through the Mashpee Magazine and this website. I have been working here since May of 2014. I have several different responsibilities at the Chamber. The latest work I have done was to create the slideshow presentation for the Annual Dinner. Previously, I have created a few websites for upcoming events, such as the Pirate Palooza and the Christmas Parade. Other responsibilities at the Chamber include editing, writing, and data entry.
I wrote two articles for the 2015 Mashpee Magazine and one for the 2014 Mashpee Magazine. The theme for the 2014 Mashpee Magazine was “Making Headlines,” and different businesses in Mashpee were interviewed. I was not working at the Chamber of Commerce yet when I was asked to write an article for the magazine, and so I wrote one on LIFE Inc., describing how the community and its residents were making headlines. This year, I wrote one article independently and another article with Katy Acheson and a member of the Wampanoag Indian Tribe.
I have been living in Mashpee for five years; I moved here in June of 2010 from Sandwich. I am originally from Framingham, where I grew up and lived until 2007. I went to a school for the deaf in Framingham from the time I was two until graduating at the age of twenty. Now I am at LIFE Inc., which is a supportive living community for adults with developmental disabilities. It is not very surprising that the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce reached out to LIFE Inc., last year to ask a resident to write an article for the Mashpee Magazine; LIFE residents are almost always seen out and about in town.
The staff at LIFE reached out to me and asked me to write the article for the upcoming 2014 Mashpee Magazine, knowing I have excellent writing skills and that I am intellectually capable. It came as a huge surprise, but I was more than happy at being given this wonderful opportunity to write for the Chamber of Commerce, as well as being able to put my name and writing skills out there. I have been writing for a really long time, and this felt like a breath of fresh air—to be able to write what I know, what I feel, what is fact, what is real as opposed to fiction.
I wrote a three-page article for the 2014 Mashpee Magazine, detailing what LIFE Inc., is and how the residents get involved in the community; from events such as the Jolly Jaunt, to working at Stop & Shop, to being a regular customer at local businesses. It wasn’t long after I wrote the article that Katy and Mary Lou asked me to come to the Chamber and work for them.
The purpose of this blog will be to inform the readers—residents near and far, visitors, and local businesses—on upcoming events held by the Chamber, local businesses, or the town as well as informative entries on the town of Mashpee and the Chamber of Commerce. I am hoping to include interviews with local businesses, as well as those who are involved with the Chamber. I hope you will subscribe to this blog and keep yourself updated, even if you never come to this town! You may know someone who lives in or visits Massachusetts who may be interested in what this blog provides.
