Getting To Know Us – Rachael Hicks, Care…From the Heart

Katy and I have been getting a few replies from those on the Board of Directors regarding my questions for them. The latest reply was from Rachael Hicks, co-owner of Care…From the Heart. This Chamber-affiliated business provides independent living support for elders as well as end-of-life care.

Rachael Hicks has recently retired from her administrative duties; however, she is still involved with the organization. Her daughter, Janez, is currently the acting manager. Mrs. Hicks has said now that she has retired, she hopes she is able to be a more active member of the Chamber of Commerce by helping more with events and daily projects.

Mrs. Hicks has been a Chamber member for several years. In the years since becoming a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Hicks has sponsored various events as well as helping plan them. She has been a board member for almost two years. Since becoming a member, Mrs. Hicks has told her friends about the Chamber and has given information on upcoming events.

As a member of the Board of Directors, Mrs. Hicks has attended Chamber meetings, and has been involved with the planning and implementing many of the wonderful events Mashpee holds. Mrs. Hicks organizes the Kids’ Fit Run for the Chamber’s Road Race and volunteers at most of the Chamber events.

Mrs. Hicks isn’t originally from Mashpee, but she has been here long enough to see how much the town has changed since 1978. There have been increased community housings, such as the Over-55 living communities, affordable housings, as well as an assisted living center for seniors with dementia.

Mrs. Hicks said all of this has had a huge impact on local businesses that offer a wider variety of services and the opportunity to shop locally for all their needs. Mashpee High school was built in 2000, the Boys & Girls Club grew, which is excellent at providing services for children. A second fire station in South Mashpee was built as well as Heritage Park with all its equipment to entertain the kids.

Mrs. Hicks’ background is physical therapy, which she has an Associate’s Degree in. In the past, she has worked as a Physical Therapist’s Assistant. She has also worked in Geriatric Rehab for many years, which has led her into starting her own Home Care Agency. She says working with rehab clients who were returning home and needed extra care is what prompted her to begin Care…From the Heart, a home care provider for the elderly.

When asked how she believes Care…From the Heart has contributed to the Chamber of Commerce, she listed several reasons. First and foremost, Care…From the Heart is a member of the Chamber. They are also a service provider that the Chamber can refer community members to as a return of favor. Mrs. Hicks and Care…From the Heart has sponsored Chamber events in the past, such as A Taste of Mashpee, Business After Hours, and La Tavola to name a few.

Since moving to Mashpee 37 years ago, Mrs. Hicks has owned several businesses that operated here. She worked as a seamstress and created home décor under the business name of Rachael’s Finishing Touch in the late 1980s. Mrs. Hicks then had a Reiki practice, which she operated at home before moving to Falmouth. The business operated from the late 1990s to 2001. Mrs. Hicks opened Care…From the Heart in 2004, which has been operating since. She has recently retired from her administrative duties and is now doing limited hands on care with the clients at Care…From the Heart.

As with most towns on Cape Cod, Mashpee has an increasing population of those who are retired. Many of these retired seniors have left their extended families inland or in other states, choosing to spend their retirement in Mashpee or elsewhere on the Cape. Sometimes, these elderly citizens find themselves in need of assistance such as with household duties and getting to appointments.

This is where Care…From the Heart comes in, this business provides services to aging seniors so they are able to stay at home and live as independently as possible. Care…From the Heart also provides hands on end-of-life care with the local Hospice agencies on Cape Cod.
