Jerome Kern was perhaps the most significant pioneer of American musical theatre, writing the delightfully innovative Princess Theatre musicals before 1920. By the time he and Oscar Hammerstein wrote Show Boat in 1927, he was one of the elite composers on Broadway. His life in New York and Hollywood encompassed sixty years that produced over 1,200 songs in more than 100 works for stage and film. Delight in some of his immortal tunes— “A Fine Romance,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “All the Things You Are,” “The Way You Look Tonight”— while hearing Robert Wyatt play transcriptions of songs.

The world from 30,000 feet is a huge puzzle made up of shapes, colors and endless strings of connections and roads. within that chaos we find places to live – we choose a place – the place becomes us and we become that place.  When you need to move on, whether by choice or force, you can choose what pieces to take with you… or not.

“Several encounters with visual phenomena in my early life solidified my later path to becoming an artist. One encounter happened when I was five and visited the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. I now reflect back on that visit as one of the portals into an ability to imagine an event without the limitations of boundaries and time.” – Ric Haynes. Read more.

Artist talk on Sunday, June 11th at 4 PM.

Liz Mumford’s nostalgic paintings of New England scenes and seaside life reflect a contemporary take on the simple pleasures and traditions of our American heritage. This exhibit highlights both Mumford’s signature style of painted tableaux with lettered borders drawn from such sources of New England wisdom as Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richards Almanac, bible verses, and sea shanties and presents a new direction in her creative work, that of large-scale circular watercolors.

Elizabeth Mumford’s artwork will be displayed at the Cahoon Museum of American Art until June 25th 2017.
