Becki’s Blog: Mashpee Calendar of Events

You may have noticed a few changes to the layout of the Mashpee Chamber website. One of the biggest additions we have made is a calendar of events, which I have been working on for the past month and half. The calendar of events consists of not only Mashpee Chamber events, but other events that appear in the Mashpee

Magazine as well. Right now, you are probably wondering why we are adding a calendar of events if we already have them listed in the guidebook. Great question! I misplace things and can’t find them until months, even a year or two, later. By that point, the information that I was once looking for is most likely irrelevant. In the case of the Mashpee Magazine, we have so many events listed between June and August, that having that at your fingertips is very important. But, if you lose it, you can still refer to our upcoming events on the Mashpee Chamber website so that event won’t be a thing of the past once you find the event you’re interested in.

Working on the calendar of events is more than just submitting entries, it’s a lot of work involved. First, I have to find the business’ information that’s hosting the events and then the vendor. If there is no information on the Mashpee Chamber website, I have to do some research so I can enter it myself. If there are recurring events through the season, I have to duplicate the original event entry, edit the hyperlink, and change the date. I try to be as consistent and detailed as possible.

The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce is a small, local business that serves the community. We want to reach out to as many citizens and visitors as possible, especially during the busy summer season here on Cape Cod. We know people want to find things to do and can only do so when they know where and what to look for. Hopefully, the Calendar of Events will help people find what they are interested in and draw more participants to our events and events going on around the Upper Cape.

You can access the Mashpee Chamber Calendar of Events below.

  • “The Art of Upcycling: From Trash to Treasure” – Recent Works by Carol Flax
    All day
    10/08/17-17/09/17

August 10 – September 17, 2017 Woodruff’s Art Center will have on view “The Art of Upcycling: From Trash to Treasure” an exhibition of recent works by Carol Flax. An Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, August 10th from 5:00 -7:00pm. The artist will be present to meet and discuss her techniques for creating one of a kind Cut Paper Mosaics entirely with reclaimed papers.

Crowell Beach – Fall by Carol Flax

Carol layers cut papers in a way that mimics brushstrokes resulting in a “painterly” look which reference the natural shapes and movement in the landscapes or objects they depict. When viewed up close the art may appear quite abstract or impressionistic, but upon stepping back reveals a great degree of its two-dimensionality.

Electronic versions of magazines, catalogs, and calendars have made printed editions of these publications nearly a thing of the past. In their heyday, high-end magazines were kept on coffee tables and saved for months or years. Calendars with beautiful photography graced the kitchen wall near the phone year round. Libraries had copies of hundreds of magazines that readers could borrow, and certainly no one ever threw away a National Geographic magazine; those often piled up for generations in someone’s attic.

Nowadays, recycling centers have become the holding place for many print publications, and Carol Flax, like many artists interested in using reclaimed material, go to the local center to find their medium. The pages of many high-end publications are full of glossy photography laden with brilliant colors and textures have become her palette. Paper won’t last long when exposed to time and the elements, so being able to turn something meant for disposal into a piece of art has brought added pleasure to her creative process.

Introducing a hot, new jazz collaboration with Woods Hole Jazz. Three amazing shows with international jazz musicians for the BEST of jazz this summer.

Hilary Gardner, Vocalist and Ehud Asherie, Pianist
    August 13, 4:00 pm

Only one thing need be said about the singing of Hilary Gardner and it has already been written by Stephen Holden of the New York Times “…an uninhibited answer to the young Doris Day.” Her repertoire takes you back to the old standards of the Golden Age of Broadway and forward to the new and edgy sounds of American music in the 21st century. But there is a freshness to her delivery that makes people breathe just a bit harder. She brings with her Israeli pianist Ehud Asherie, who will make magic on our Mason & Hamlin grand piano. New York critics like him too, calling him “a master of swing and stride,” The New Yorker. The late afternoon of August 13 will be a classy time in our mansion. Why would you want to be anywhere else?

    Register.
