New York Times Bestselling Author Gives Talk on New Book About Cuban Missile Crisis
FALMOUTH—New York Times bestselling author and former investigative reporter Casey Sherman will give a talk at Falmouth Museums on the Green on Friday, May 4, at 7:00 pm. (The event was rescheduled from May 3).
Sherman will discuss his latest book, Above & Beyond: John F. Kennedy and America’s Most Dangerous Cold War Spy Mission (Public Affairs, April 2018). The book, co-written with Michael Tougias, covers the Cuban Missile crisis, that infamous 13-day stretch in October 1962 when America was on the precipice of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. It’s told through the eyes of President John F. Kennedy and two little-known U-2 pilots, Rudy Anderson and Charles Maultsby, who suddenly found themselves in the cross-hairs of history.
Two of Sherman’s earlier books were turned into major motion pictures. The Finest Hours, written with Michael Tougias in 2010, hit the big screen in 2016 with the same title and an all-star cast: Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Eric Bana. It told the riveting story of four young Cape Cod Coast Guardsmen who saved 32 men on a capsized oil tanker in 1952. The same year, Sherman’s Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy (2015) morphed into Patrio ts Day , a crime drama-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and subsequent terrorist manhunt.
Sherman also wrote the Ice Bucket Challenge with Dave Wedge, the inspirational true story about former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates and his battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. The book inspired the internet craze that swept the nation in the summer of 2014.
“Casey is an incredibly gifted storyteller—on the page and in person,” said Mark Schmidt, Executive Director of Falmouth Museums on the Green. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Above and Beyond became a blockbuster movie someday.”
The talk will be held in the Cultural Center on the Museums campus at 55 and 65 Palmer Avenue in Falmouth. Admission is $8/$5 members. Eight Cousins Bookstore will have copies of Above & Beyond for sale at the event. For additional information, visit museumsonthegreen.org or call 508548-4857, ext. 10.
